PART 1 — THE WHISPER

My grandson’s birth was supposed to become one of the happiest memories of my life.

Instead, less than an hour after I held him for the first time, a nurse pulled me aside in the hospital hallway and whispered six words that made me question everything my son had told me for almost a year.

“That isn’t the child he left with.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

The nurse’s expression changed immediately.

She looked toward my son’s room.

Then back at me.

“I’m sorry.”

“No.

What did you just say?”

Her face went pale.

“You… don’t know?”

Before I could answer, another nurse called her name from the far end of the corridor.

She apologized again and hurried away.

I remained beside the vending machines with one hand against the wall.

For several seconds, I could not move.

My name is Evelyn Mercer.
