My mother’s eyes filled. “We made one mistake, Lauren. Families shouldn’t be destroyed forever because some scared people misjudged one hard moment.”

“It wasn’t one moment, and you didn’t misjudge it,” I said. “You called Grant before we ever got there. You coordinated with him. You deliberately took away every option I had except going back to him. That’s not a moment. That’s a plan.”

Brooke started to cry. And I noticed, with a kind of quiet wonder, that her tears no longer automatically pulled my attention off my own footing the way they had my whole life.
