“So we never have to forgive them?”
“It means nobody gets to demand it from you before you feel safe. And it means forgiving someone, if you ever choose to, is a completely separate thing from letting them back into your life. You can do one and not the other. You get to decide both. Not them.”
Chapter 13 — The Apology That Named the Harm
Eighteen months after the porch, I stood in front of a room of hospital staff and community members at a workshop, wearing an ID badge that read Medical Records Compliance Supervisor. Adam sat with the children near the back, helping Caleb with a shoelace while Maisie whispered, loud enough for the front row, that I looked like a real executive.
When I finished answering questions, I saw my parents at the far side of the conference room.
They had come alone this time — no Trevor, no Brooke — and they had waited near the exit until I was done, until I wasn’t in the middle of anything they could interrupt.
