And then Sarah reached into the pocket of her sweater, and drew out a small glass bottle, and tipped her hand over Lily’s glass of orange juice, and slipped the bottle back out of sight, all in one smooth, practiced motion, quick enough that a person not looking for it would never have seen it at all.

“Play that again,” Marcus said, very softly.

Ryan played it again.

And Marcus watched his wife put something into his daughter’s drink, on a recording, in his own kitchen, and he did not say anything, and he did not move, and something inside him that had been human and trusting and married went quietly, permanently cold.

He would not describe, afterward, what it felt like to watch that clip.
