Three years passed.

One sunny afternoon I walked with Hannah down to The Second House, where rescue animals dozed under clean wooden shelters and three young kids from the military center brushed a pair of ponies, and where pink bougainvillea now bloomed along the fence, in the very place the mud and rotting straw had been.

“Do you remember the day you found me here?” Hannah asked, leaning on the rail.

“I remember every second of it,” I said.
