I showed up at the hospital to surprise my husband during his shift. But the second one of his coworkers saw me, all the color left his face. Then his eyes filled with tears. “He hasn’t said a word to you, has he?” Ben and I had been married eleven years, and for every one of those years, I had shared him with the hospital. He was a remarkably gifted surgeon.
My hands shook badly as I took my phone out of my purse and called Brian’s personal number.
He answered on the second ring, his voice warm, patient, and misleadingly calm.
“Hi, sweetheart, I’ve only got two minutes before I scrub in for a complicated procedure.”
I held Paul’s gaze, and he lowered his eyes to the floor in complete despair.
“What sort of procedure are you doing today, Brian?”
“Just an emergency appendectomy that ought to take about an hour, so is everything all right at home?”
The truth was sitting right on the tip of my tongue, ready to rip our eleven-year marriage into tiny pieces.
