I showed up at the hospital to surprise my husband during his shift. But the second one of his coworkers saw me, all the color left his face. Then his eyes filled with tears. “He hasn’t said a word to you, has he?” Ben and I had been married eleven years, and for every one of those years, I had shared him with the hospital. He was a remarkably gifted surgeon.
“She wiped away your tears, Brian, so don’t tell me what I should or shouldn’t think after I found those secret bank slips.”
“Her name is Carmen Ortiz, and she’s the mother of the little boy who died on my operating table.”
The kitchen sank into a smothering silence, broken only by the faint tick of the grandfather clock in the dining room.
“You’re secretly paying the grieving mother of a child who died during your surgery, Brian, so do you have any idea how guilty that looks?”
“She lost her job after Lucas died, and she has a seven-year-old daughter named Isabel to feed while she’s facing eviction any day.”
