I showed up at the hospital to surprise my husband during his shift. But the second one of his coworkers saw me, all the color left his face. Then his eyes filled with tears. “He hasn’t said a word to you, has he?” Ben and I had been married eleven years, and for every one of those years, I had shared him with the hospital. He was a remarkably gifted surgeon.
I opened it and found the woman from the cemetery standing on my porch in the crisp morning air.
She had on the same faded blue cardigan, her dark braid lying over one shoulder and her eyes ringed with deep circles of grief.
“Mrs.
Carter, my name’s Carmen Ortiz, and your husband doesn’t know I drove over here today.”
She took an unsteady breath and pressed her hands together.
“If someone doesn’t step up and help Dr.
Carter right now, he’s going to lose his whole future because of my family.”
PART 5
I paused for a moment with my hand on the doorknob, then stepped back and invited her in.
