I showed up at the hospital to surprise my husband during his shift. But the second one of his coworkers saw me, all the color left his face. Then his eyes filled with tears. “He hasn’t said a word to you, has he?” Ben and I had been married eleven years, and for every one of those years, I had shared him with the hospital. He was a remarkably gifted surgeon.
“My testimony on its own won’t be enough to save him, because the hospital will make me out to be a bitter, disgruntled ex-cleaner looking for a payout.”
“Is there anyone else who can back up what happened in that operating room?”
“Yes, there’s a scrub nurse named Jenna Holloway who assisted with the surgery that night.”
Carmen drew a short, shallow breath.
“Jenna told me privately that she took a picture with her phone of the original handwritten surgical chart before Walsh swapped it for the forged one.”
For the very first time, hope flickered in my chest.
