I showed up at the hospital to surprise my husband during his shift. But the second one of his coworkers saw me, all the color left his face. Then his eyes filled with tears. “He hasn’t said a word to you, has he?” Ben and I had been married eleven years, and for every one of those years, I had shared him with the hospital. He was a remarkably gifted surgeon.
“Karen, please take the kids into the kitchen for a few minutes,” he said quietly.
As soon as the door swung closed, I walked into the middle of the room and looked him square in the face.
“You told Jenna Holloway to keep her mouth shut about the photo of the original surgical log.”
Paul didn’t say one word to deny it, lowering himself onto the wooden arm of his sofa.
“You were sitting right there at that monitor, Paul, and you know Dr.
Walsh caused that fatal tear while he was impaired by alcohol.”
