Chapter 7 — The Detective and the Caseworker

Mason and Daisy were sleeping in a shared room — Mason in a bed, Daisy in a crib with a plush bear a nurse had found for her — when two people I didn’t know stepped into the hall to talk to me.

One was a police detective named Neil Blake, a broad, tired-looking man with kind eyes; the other was a child welfare specialist named Clara Higgins, holding a clipboard against her chest like a shield.

“We sent officers to the house on Maple Avenue,” Detective Blake told me.
