I have fixed a great many things in my life; it is, in a sense, my profession.

I know how a broken thing behaves, how it resists and then gives, how the worst-looking damage is sometimes the easiest to repair and the hairline crack you can barely see is sometimes the one that brings the whole structure down.

And I can tell you that nothing I have ever mended taught me what I learned holding my nephew on that living room rug.
