I Stopped Being the Shield
Victor nodded slowly, a small, proud smile touching the corners of his mouth. “And what do you think they learned? Dominic, Chloe, all of them?”
I turned back into the wind and let it lift my hair. It didn’t feel like the storm from two years ago. It felt like freedom.
“I think they learned that real power isn’t money in a bank account or a title on a corporate door,” I said. “Real power is knowing exactly when to stop protecting the people who keep hurting you — and letting them burn in the fires they lit themselves.”
Sophia ran over, out of breath, the puppy bounding at her heels. She threw her arms around my waist and buried her face in my coat. This time she wasn’t crying in fear.
She was warm, and she was safe, in a home where she’d never have to question her worth or whether she belonged.
I looked out across the city and thought about the quiet, loyal woman I used to be. I had been terrified that my strength would make my marriage less real.
But hiding my fire didn’t protect my family. It only let the shadows grow deeper.
Dominic thought he could push us into the dark and step into a brighter future alone.
Instead, he forced me to turn all the lights on. And once the light hit him, his entire world turned to ash.
THE END.
