She had swallowed her husband’s constant scorn, her mother-in-law Beverly’s insults, her sister-in-law Annika’s shameless theft of her things.
She had given up a high-flying career, cooked elaborate meals for all of them, and let herself be called a lazy parasite living off her husband’s money.
She had even made herself ignore the foreign perfume on Edwin’s suits and the messages he hid whenever she walked into the room, while everyone mistook her patience for weakness.

Camila bolted for the main exit. Edwin rushed after her, locked the heavy mahogany door, and unclipped the dog’s leash.
“Go on,” he taunted, pointing at the animal. “Three laps underneath him, and then I’ll consider letting you leave.”
