Florence had not physically struck Christina out of hatred or malice.

She had struck her because Christina had discovered part of the truth and was about to recklessly confront Thomas Gable directly before Florence had secured enough evidence to ensure Christina’s safety.

It certainly did not excuse her violent actions, but it completely transformed the context of everything I thought I knew.
