I did not look back at the venue.

I have never regretted it for one second.

I have thought often about the strangeness of who showed up for me that day, because it taught me something about people I have never forgotten.

On that morning, the people who were supposed to love me — my fiance, my closest friend, my almost-family, the whole assembled crowd of guests who had known me for years — either actively betrayed me or stood by and watched me be humiliated and did nothing.

And the person who crossed the room to help me was a man I had known, in any real sense, for a matter of hours, whose entire prior relationship to me consisted of the fact that I had operated on his child.
