Chapter 14 — What Andrew Never Asked

That question sent me back, in the following days, over the whole architecture of the relationship I had just escaped, and I saw it, for the first time, clearly.

For two years I had confused a comfortable arrangement with a partnership, which are not remotely the same thing.

Andrew had said he loved me, and perhaps in some threadbare way he believed it, but in two years he had never once asked me how a difficult surgery had gone.

Never asked whether a patient had made it.
