Chapter 4 — The Man He Thought He’d Married
To understand why Damian was so certain I would go, you have to understand the woman he believed he had married.
He believed I managed a modest inheritance and filled my days volunteering at an arts foundation.
He believed I was pleasant and ornamental and financially illiterate, a woman who had been handed some money and did not entirely understand where it came from.
It was a version of me he found deeply comfortable, because it made him, by comparison, the serious one, the capable one, the one whose work mattered.
