I looked at my daughter. Not at him. Not yet.
“Come with me, Valeria.”
Andrés slammed his palm on the table. “She’s not going anywhere. She’s busy.”
Valeria took one step toward me. Andrés pointed at her. “Don’t even think about it.”
She stopped. I saw her body obey before her face could decide.
That was the second thing I’ll never forget. The first was her purple hands. The second was watching fear answer for her.
