The weekend visits kept going after that, week over week.

Some were easy and some were nearly silent, but Jason stopped demanding warmth he hadn’t earned yet and simply came, on time, and did the work of being there.

One evening in November he called two hours ahead to say a court hearing was running long and he’d be late.

Claire felt the old anger flare up hot and fast — and then she did something new with it. She held the phone out to Owen.

“You tell him yourself,” she said. Not to punish Jason. To make him account to the person he’d actually let down.

Jason explained the delay to his son directly, and Owen listened without interrupting.
