The physical experience of standing within one of these enclosures is difficult to reconstruct with certainty, because the original roofing and the precise height of the walls are uncertain.

Some researchers propose that the enclosures were roofed, at least partially, perhaps using wooden beams or organic materials that did not survive.

Others are less certain.

If roofed, the central pillars would have served as structural elements supporting the ceiling, giving the tall T-shaped forms a functional role in addition to whatever symbolic significance they carried.

If unroofed, or open at the top, the enclosures would have functioned more like courtyards or outdoor gathering places with monumental sculptural elements.

The stone for the pillars and walls came from local limestone outcrops.
