It is, in a sense, the most human question we can ask of the past.

We want to know not just what happened or how, but why — not in the mechanical causal sense but in the sense of meaning and purpose and intention.

We want to know what the people who made these things understood them to be.

That question will not be answered.

The specific story, the specific names, the specific theology or cosmology or social narrative within which these pillars made sense to their creators: these are gone in a way that no future excavation or analysis will recover.

But the question itself — persisting, renewed each time someone encounters these stones for the first time — may be one of the things that Göbekli Tepe most reliably produces.
