The perimeter pillars of each enclosure are distinguished from the central pair by being somewhat smaller and by carrying a greater variety of animal imagery and by not always bearing the clear anthropomorphic details that mark the central pillars.

This distinction may reflect a hierarchical arrangement in which the central figures hold a different and perhaps more elevated status than the surrounding elements.

The Animals: A Carved Bestiary

The animal imagery at Göbekli Tepe is extensive, diverse, and clearly not random.

Dozens of species or creature types appear across the pillars and other carved surfaces, with varying frequencies and in varying contexts.

Some appear in isolation; others appear in processions or groups; some are depicted in aggressive or predatory postures; others seem calmer or more neutral.
