Archaeological evidence from Göbekli Tepe and from its interpretation provides a strong basis for understanding the site as a place of periodic large-scale gathering, and possibly of communal feasting.
Analysis of the animal bones recovered from the site has identified the remains of a wide variety of wild game species.
Gazelle, aurochs, wild boar, red deer, and other animals are represented in quantities that substantially exceed what would be expected from the ordinary domestic food consumption of a small resident group.
The pattern is consistent with the processing and consumption of large quantities of food over extended periods — with large-scale communal meals at which many people participated.
