What the Pillars Cannot Tell Us

There is a category of question about Göbekli Tepe that honest scholarship must acknowledge cannot be answered with the evidence currently available.

We cannot know the specific beliefs and narratives attached to the central T-pillar figures.

We know they appear anthropomorphic.

We know they stood at the center of specially constructed enclosures.

We know they were associated with rich animal imagery and with the deposits of food and material from communal activities.

But the specific stories, cosmologies, and spiritual frameworks within which these figures were understood by the people who built and used the site are not recoverable from the archaeological evidence.
