Iris Held On to Her Paid-Off Title When Her Father Threatened to Call the Police
She untied the ribbon, lifted the lid, and looked at the solid silver bracelet I had bought from a jeweler near my office in Seattle.
“Oh,” Eleanor said, giving a quick nod before smoothing her cardigan over her knees.
“That’s very bright, Iris.
Thank you.”
She set the box on the edge of the side table and reached for a wrapped box Chelsea had brought.
I passed a rectangular package across the table to Chelsea.
Inside was a specialized wide-angle camera lens she had asked for two months earlier, which had cost seven hundred and fifty dollars.
Chelsea tore off the paper, glanced at the black cylinder inside the plastic display case, and set the open box on the rug beside her chair without taking the lens out.
