Iris Held On to Her Paid-Off Title When Her Father Threatened to Call the Police
My thumb ran along the laminated edge of my clean Toyota title, printed on blue security paper, inside my travel folder.

I walked to counter seven and laid my state title certificate, my registration card, and my driver’s license on the polished counter.
A clerk with short gray hair and silver reading glasses hanging from a blue lanyard looked up from her monitor.
“How can I help you today?” she asked.
“I need an official title status verification for a 2017 Toyota,” I said.
“I need to confirm there are no outstanding liens or active out-of-state administrative holds.”
