Joanna Holloway — The House They Tried to Take

The treasurer’s certified payment history lists payments from an account matching the defendant’s evidence.

I had receipts from eleven years of property taxes and the transfer confirmation for the year before that.
I also had insurance renewals, county inspection notices, photographs of work I’d commissioned, and copies of emails from Walter’s attorney.
But before I could speak, my mother whispered, “Donald, don’t.”
It was the first time I had heard fear in her voice.
Dad ignored her.
“I was told those payments were made on my behalf.”
“By whom?”
He looked at me.
“By my daughter.”
I almost laughed.
