Just a Routine Checkup
I opened my conversation with Gordon and typed two short sentences.
My medical appointment was every bit as important as your mother’s shopping trip. I hope you both understand what it feels like when your needs are treated as unimportant.
I read it once, pressed Send, and watched the delivery confirmation appear. Then I blocked his number, turned off the screen, and set the phone face down on the passenger seat.
Back at the mall, Gordon saw the message almost immediately. He and Rita were standing in the crowded main corridor, trying to figure out how to get home, and when his phone chimed he assumed I was finally on my way.
Instead he read my text. As he later admitted to our attorney, that was the moment he understood the truth. There had never been a work emergency. I had left on purpose.
I had let the consequences of their own decisions catch up with them.
