“I can’t reschedule,” I answered. “My doctor specifically told me I need to be there today.”
Rita waved the concern away. “Doctors always say things like that. They make people worry so they’ll keep coming back.”
“This isn’t something I can ignore. I’ve been in pain for weeks, and the medication hasn’t helped.”
Gordon stepped closer, arms folded. “Seriously, Jocelyn.” He used the same slow, patronizing tone he always adopted when he wanted me to believe I was overreacting.
“You make plenty of money. Mom’s been stressed lately. A shopping day will make her feel better.”
I looked from him to his mother. “So buying designer clothes matters more than my doctor’s appointment?”
