Chapter 8 — The Crease in the Folder

Several weeks later, I noticed my manila medical folder sitting on the kitchen counter, one corner still bent from the moment Rita had shoved it aside.

I ran my fingers along the crease and remembered how quickly I’d caught it before it hit the floor.

It made me think of my marriage. For years, Gordon had pushed something valuable toward the edge — trust, respect, financial security, even my own health — and I had always rushed to save it.

Every time, I told myself I was protecting the relationship. Eventually I understood that one person cannot keep saving a relationship while the other keeps pushing it toward collapse.

There is a difference between compromise and losing yourself. Between supporting family and funding entitlement. Between forgiveness and permission. I had mistaken those things for each other far too long.

Months later, another endoscopy showed the ulcer had begun to heal. My weight stabilized. My appetite slowly returned. For the first time in months, I slept through the night without waking in pain.
