Just Follow My Dad
It had never given way easily before; he had never had cause to try.
He tipped the urn over a sheet of newspaper spread across his desk, slowly, his hands not quite steady.
No ash came out.
What poured onto the newspaper was coarse gray sand, crushed drywall, a fine dust like powdered cement.
He sat down very hard in the desk chair.
For a moment his mind simply refused it, tried to make it mean something ordinary — a mix-up at the facility, a settling of the remains, some innocent explanation his exhausted brain couldn’t reach.
