One of the officers stepped forward. “Ms. Margaret?”

“Yes.”

“We’re going to need you to come with us.”

My relief vanished. I looked from the officers to Sabrina. “Did you tell them I took your baby?”

Sabrina lowered her gaze. She said nothing. My stomach sank. I held Ava a little closer as I stepped onto the porch and into the rain, following the officers toward a waiting patrol car, my heart pounding so hard I could barely hear the rainfall.

One question kept repeating in my head. Why had Sabrina pointed at me?
