Just One Hour
Coral Pike looked at me and her chin went, and she said, “Thank you,” and then she said, “I’d better go back in,” and she went.
I told Sabrina about it that night. All of it, including that I’d described Ava’s rabbit.
I want to record that she was angry. She had every right to be, and she used the word envelope, and I stopped talking, and I sat there.
Then, about a minute later, she said, “No. Not envelope. That one’s different. Say the rest.”
So I said the rest. And Sabrina sat on my couch with her hands around her knees and said, “She wrote to me twice. I never opened them.”
“You don’t have to.”
