Lauren covered her face again. The scheme was larger than even Martin had expected. I sent him a screenshot from the bedroom camera. He called the bank attorney, and within minutes they’d reached the investigator across the street.
The investigator entered with Claire’s permission, photographed the bag without removing anything, and told Lauren not to touch it. She obeyed. For once, she followed instructions without arguing.
At 2:18 a.m., Ethan called me again, his voice calmer. “You found the bag.”
“Yes.”
“It’s not mine.”
“Of course not.”
