I got in the car and I drove to the hospital, and the whole way there I was imagining his face.

I pictured him being paged out of some meeting or some quiet moment, coming out to find me standing there with a lunchbox like a newlywed, half exasperated and half delighted, telling me I shouldn’t have, that he was fine, that I worried too much.

I was smiling to myself the entire drive.
