Look at the Dates
What came out around that table was not reconciliation.
It was only accuracy, which is a smaller and harder thing, and in some ways a lonelier one.
Linda had repeated a lie she had not checked.
Danny had paid for hotels because he believed a lie he had not checked.
Mark had heard the lie and, almost uniquely in my family, had thought to ask for the dates.
And I had kept the truth private for three years, which had made the lie’s job easy, because a secret is simply an empty room that other people get to furnish with whatever story they please.
The dates did not give me my family back.
