Trust is not supposed to be a thing you spend to cover a gap where an answer should be.

When a person asks you to trust them instead of answering you, they are not asking for faith.

They are asking for cover.

I had given them that cover, generously, at five hundred and fifty dollars a week, for three years, and standing at her door with the folder under my arm I finally understood that the most loyal thing I had ever done for my parents was also the thing that had made it easiest for them to use me, and that loyalty and being used are not opposites.

They are, in the wrong family, the same material seen from two sides.
