PART 6: The Receipt Nobody Could Explain

On Thursday, Sam placed a sheet of paper on the kitchen table.

It showed six months of transfers from my checking account: fifteen hundred dollars each month to an account Daniel called the Household Fund, and four hundred more for what he claimed was supplementary insurance.

I had asked for receipts before.

Daniel always told me I should be grateful he was managing the paperwork.

It turned out my existing coverage hadn’t changed; the extra insurance payment wasn’t going to an insurer at all.
