“Do you think he knows how happy we are?” I looked up at the darkening sky and felt the cool salt breeze move through my hair, and I thought about a bright hospital corridor and a single sheet of paper, and a quiet formal man in a lonely house, and a door that had closed on my fear and opened onto a life I could never have imagined.
