I had braced, standing in that bright corridor with an estimate I could not pay, for the loss of my son, and had received instead his whole long life.
So much of what we spend our days fearing never comes, and so much of what saves us we would never have thought to hope for.
I do not say this to make light of anyone’s fear; my own was real, and reasonable, and I would not scold a soul for feeling it.
I say it only because I have lived, now, on the far side of a terror that turned into a blessing, and I would not have believed, standing in that corridor, that such a turning was even possible.
