“I could have married anyone,” Arthur went on.

“There is no shortage of people willing to marry a fortune.

I did not marry you to spite my children, Clara, whatever they will say.

I married you because in ten years you are the only person who has walked through the doors of this house and wanted nothing from me.”

I began to protest, but he raised a hand.
