Marie Dorion Found Her Husband Dead In The Snow — Then Crossed 250 Miles Of Frozen Wilderness With Her Two Children
The Hunt expedition departed from St.
Louis in March 1811 and from the Missouri River staging area in July 1811.
The route they took is documented in Hunt’s own journals and in the accounts of several other participants.
The first months were relatively manageable.
The expedition moved through the grasslands of present-day South Dakota and Wyoming, acquiring horses from Indigenous communities along the way, accumulating dried buffalo meat, making reasonable progress through summer terrain.
Marie walked for a substantial portion of this journey until additional horses were obtained.
