The Willamette Valley — Where The Story Settles

The Willamette Valley of Oregon, where Marie Dorion spent her final years and died in September 1850, was one of the contested spaces of early American continental expansion.

By the time Marie settled there, the valley was already attracting significant numbers of American settlers via the Oregon Trail, which had been established as a wagon route in the early 1840s.

The settlers who arrived via the trail were coming from established American states in the East, bringing with them the agricultural practices, legal frameworks, and cultural assumptions of American settler society.
