The historian’s obligation, when writing about a figure like Marie Dorion, is to be clear about the difference between what is documented and what is inferred.

What is documented:

Marie Aioe Dorion was an Ioway woman, born around 1786, who partnered with interpreter Pierre Dorion Jr. and traveled with the Wilson Price Hunt overland expedition in 1811-1812 as the only woman in the party.

She had two sons with her during the expedition.
