May You Live With What You Choose
Chapter 1 — The Hallway
“Once she signs the marriage certificate, Jason can start moving the money.”
My mother’s voice drifted through the half-open living-room door with the same calm precision she used when discussing seating plans, florist charges, and which relatives should be kept away from the best tables.
I stopped in the hallway of my sister’s condo, still wearing my rain-dampened coat. A small velvet box rested in my palm. Inside was the bracelet I had commissioned for Sydney to wear as my maid of honor, less than twelve hours later.
Beyond the door, someone slid a glass across the coffee table. Then Dad spoke.
“Meline won’t question him. She wants this wedding too badly.”
A quiet laugh followed. Sydney’s. My younger sister — the person I had trusted with my dress fittings, my guest list, and every nervous thought I’d shared through two years of wedding planning.
I stayed perfectly still. Rain tapped against the tall windows overlooking the peaceful suburban street. The entryway smelled faintly of wet wool and the expensive lavender candle Sydney always lit when company came.
I had used my spare key because I wanted the bracelet to be a surprise.
Instead, I heard my fiancé speak from inside the room. “Are you sure Terrence doesn’t suspect anything?”
My fingers closed around the velvet box. Terrence was Sydney’s husband — a respected surgeon who worked exhausting hours yet still remembered to send Mom flowers on her birthday.
He had always shown me more kindness than the people who had known me since birth.
Sydney laughed again. “He thinks the baby is his.”
