Jason’s employer opened an internal investigation after learning he had concealed substantial debts and used professional contacts to explore funding for personal obligations.
He resigned before it ended. His promotion disappeared, and so did the reputation he had spent years building. He called repeatedly. I answered once.
“I love you,” he said.
“You loved what you assumed I could provide.”
“That isn’t fair.”
“Neither was planning a marriage around my credit.”
