The Letter Eleanor Never Sent

Caroline met me the next morning with a family-law attorney, David Lin.

I had expected to be overwhelmed by lawyers and complex papers, but David’s first question was simple.

“Are you and the children safe today?”

I told him about the suitcases, the children waiting on the sidewalk, and the pressure to leave immediately.

He listened without interrupting.

He explained that any decisions about custody and possession of the home would need to follow New York procedures, and that I should not make promises about money or property simply to end the conflict.

Caroline handed over a binder.
