Then the doorbell rang.

Chapter 5 — The Attorney

The sound silenced the room. Rosa answered and returned with a woman in a navy coat carrying a leather briefcase, who introduced herself as Patricia Bell, Grandma’s estate attorney.

My father’s expression darkened. “You called her?”

“I called her last night,” Grandma answered.

Patricia set her briefcase on the coffee table. “Mrs. Whitaker asked me to attend today’s discussion.”

Linda’s tone softened at once. “Patricia, surely you understand this is a family matter.”
