“Nine hundred and forty,” Rosa said. “Yes. It is a great deal of money and I am not going to sit here and be pitiful about nine hundred and forty thousand dollars.
That is not the part.”
“What’s the part?”
Rosa was quiet for a moment.
“Eduardo,” she said. “My brother. He asked me for money in 2019 for his son’s school. I had just paid the bill. I told him I did not have it and he did not believe me, because in his mind I had five million dollars and I had bought a house and now I was saying no to a boy’s tuition.”
She shrugged with one shoulder. “He is my brother. He has not spoken to me in six years. He does not believe me now and he will not believe me when I am dead.”
